APSIG 2017, Bangkok

Sukosol Hotel. Ten classes, nine lecturers, twenty-one economies, and the first All SIG Meeting of the region.

The second Asia Pacific School on Internet Governance ran from 22 to 26 July 2017 at the Sukosol Hotel in Bangkok. It was the largest and most heavily structured of the founding editions, and the first to convene an All SIG Meeting bringing the national schools of the region together.

Programme

2017 is the only edition that published a separate page for every class. The programme covered cybersecurity; gender and the internet; internet policy principles; governance of the Internet of Things; the economic and business perspective; the governance of networked data; the internet governance ecosystem; local language support; and disability, taught in a fishbowl format. A hands-on workshop, two Birds-of-a-Feather sessions and the All SIG Meeting completed the week.

Faculty

The nine lecturers below taught the 2017 school. Their affiliations are given as recorded at the time.

Kilnam Chon — IoT Governance

Founder of APSIG and Professor Emeritus at KAIST. He took his PhD at UCLA in 1974 and worked at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory before joining the Korea Institute of Electronics Technology in 1979, where he began Korea’s Internet development project. He went on to found more than ten Internet organisations, among them APAN and APSIG, and wrote the three-volume Asia Internet History. He is a member of the Internet Hall of Fame and a recipient of the Jon Postel Service Award.

Susan Landau — Cybersecurity and Surveillance

Bridge Professor at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and the School of Engineering at Tufts University, and Visiting Professor of Computer Science at University College London. Author of Listening In and Surveillance or Security?, and with Whitfield Diffie of Privacy on the Line. Previously Senior Staff Privacy Analyst at Google and Distinguished Engineer at Sun Microsystems. Inducted into the Cybersecurity Hall of Fame in 2015 and a Guggenheim fellow in 2012.

KS Park — Data Governance

Professor at Korea University Law School and co-founder of Open Net Korea. A former Commissioner of the Korean Communication Standards Commission and Executive Director of the PSPD Law Center, he litigated against Korea’s Internet real-name law and against the warrantless seizure of subscriber data. He studied physics at Harvard and law at UCLA.

Anita Gurumurthy — Gender and the Internet

Founding member and executive director of IT for Change, leading its research on governance, democracy and gender justice. She founded the CITIGEN research network in 2010 and has carried out multi-country work with UNESCAP on e-government and gender.

Chinmayi Arun — Internet Policy Principles

Executive Director of the Centre for Communication Governance at National Law University Delhi, a member of India’s multistakeholder advisory group for the India IGF, and a Faculty Associate of the Berkman Klein Center. She was lead author of the India country report for Freedom House’s Freedom on the Net in 2014 and 2015.

Kenny Huang — Local Language Support

A member of the APNIC Executive Council and chair of its Policy SIG, a member of the ICANN Address Supporting Organization Address Council, and a board director of PIR and TWNIC, where he chaired the International Affairs Committee. He is also a board director of MINC, co-author of RFC 3743, and co-chair of the Joint Engineering Team of JPNIC, KRNIC, CNNIC and TWNIC.

Jiro Kokuryo — Economics and Business Perspective

Vice-President of Keio University and professor in its Faculty of Policy Management, where he served as Dean from 2009 to 2013. He took his DBA at Harvard Business School while working at NTT, and is the author of Open Architecture Strategy and Business Strategy in an Onymous Economy.

Jim Foster — Moving to the Digital Economy

Executive director of APIDE in Tokyo and senior research fellow at Keio G-SEC. He was previously Vice President of the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan, where he founded the Internet Economy Task Force, and Director of Corporate and Regulatory Affairs at Microsoft Japan. He spent twenty-five years as a United States diplomat.

Rajnesh Singh — Internet Governance Ecosystem

Director of the Asia-Pacific Regional Bureau of the Internet Society. He was the founding Chair of ICANN’s At-Large Asia Pacific Regional Organisation (APRALO) and Chair of the Internet Society’s Pacific Islands Chapter.
